Why does the centrifugal pump leak wort during whirlpool for brewing beer?

When the brewer is brewing beer with a brewhouse, he may find that the centrifugal pump leaks when the hot wort is in the process of whirlpool. After checking the pump seal, he is confident that the pump seal is in a good condition. Then, how does a centrifugal pump leak during the whirlpool process? Is it a permanent failure of the pump? How could we avoid the leak of the pump?

From the description of the problem, we know that the centrifugal pump leaks only when the wort is in the whirlpool process. So, there’s nothing about the damage of the pump seal. Because once the damage of the pump seal occurs, the centrifugal pump will leak everywhere at any time.

Then, how does a centrifugal pump leak during the whirlpool process? This is most likely due to the vortex caused in the center of the whirlpool tun, and the vortex causes the hot air entering into the centrifugal pump. When this happens, it will not only cause the centrifugal pump to leak, but also produce a large noise.

Obviously, once we could eliminate the vortex in the centre of the whirlpool tun during the wort whirlpool process, the problem of the pump leak will be solved accordingly. So, it is not a permanent failure of the pump.

How could we eliminate the vortex and avoid the leak of the pump? That’s easy! The brewer could use a tool, such as a manual rake, to destroy the vortex in the center of the whirlpool tun. Then, the air will not enter the centrifugal pump. Thus, the pump will not leak any more and the noise will also disappear.

What to be used for milling malts in microbrewery?

Malt milling is an essential step in beer brewing. There are about four ways to mill malt: namely dry milling, wet milling, moisture humidification method and impregnation humidification method.

Among them, dry milling is the most traditional milling method. Most nanobreweries and mircobreweries use this method. Dry milling equipment is less demanding, but the process involves a lot of wisdom. Malts are milled to increase the contact area of malt contents with water and enzymes. When the malts are milled, it is required that the husks are not broken, and the endosperms are fine as well. If the husks are finely milled, the wort will be filtered very slowly and become cloudy. If the grinding is too coarse, it will affect the leaching of effective components of malts and reduce the utilization rate of malts.

In terms of malt mills, roller mills are mostly used in dry milling. It is simple in structure, easy to operate, and will not cause excessive crushing. Dry milling has low energy consumption, and the milled malts are dry and can be stored for a long time.
